Somebody watered the plants. Somebody covered a shift. Somebody drove someone else to the airport at an unreasonable hour. And then a gift showed up.
Thank-you gifting has now held at its recent high for a third straight week, making up 7% of all gifting worldwide. It is not the biggest slice of the week, but it is one of the steadiest, and it moves mostly between friends and colleagues. Wine, candles and small boxes do most of the talking.
Thank-you gifts have refused to shrink for three weeks running.
A quarter of gifts had no occasion at all
The other quiet giant of the week is gifting with nothing on the calendar behind it. A full 25% of gifts carried no occasion, which puts just-because gifting second only to birthdays.
These gifts look different from the dated ones. Flowers turn up constantly, along with small parcels between friends and family members. Some of them never reach the post at all; friends wrapped something up and handed it over in person, which is about as good as gifting gets.
For merchants, no-occasion gifting is the hardest kind to plan a campaign around and the easiest kind to serve. There is no season to wait for. The shopper simply needs to be offered the option at the moment they decide.
Britain counted candles, Australia counted arrivals
Geography reshapes the same week. In Britain, seven of every ten gifts were for a birthday, a remarkably single-minded run of candles. In the United States the mix spread wider, with just-because gifts and thank-you gifts both taking real room.
Australia leaned birthday as well, but with a soft spot the others did not share: 13% of Australian gifting was for new babies. Friends and family sent knitted things and keepsakes to people meeting a baby for the first time.
Over half of all gifting this week came from outside the United States, arriving in Spanish, Turkish, French, Dutch, Italian and Arabic among others. The occasion changes at the border, but the impulse does not.
What this means for merchants
Two of the week's biggest stories, thank-you gifts and no-occasion gifts, share one trait: nobody sees them coming. There is no countdown, no seasonal banner, no email calendar slot. They are decided in the moment, often while the shopper is already in the cart.
That makes the gifting option itself the campaign. A gift message field, a wrap option and a clear price for making it special turn a regular purchase into a gift at the exact second the shopper changes their mind. Birthdays will keep arriving every single day. The gratitude and the no-reason-at-all gifts are the ones worth catching on the way past.
