The jewelry counter had the biggest week in gifting. Shops selling jewelry, luggage and leather goods handled 19% of all gifting worldwide, more than any other kind of shop, and necklaces and bracelets sat near the top of everything people actually sent.
Birthdays carried most of it. Parents are sending daughters birthday gifts with notes full of love, families are pooling together for milestone years, and a lot of that arrives as a small box with a clasp inside. Birthday gifting made up 42% of the week overall, and jewelry is where a good chunk of it landed.
Nearly one in five gifts this week came from a jewelry, luggage or leather goods shop.
Christmas gifting has already started
Here is the surprise buried in a September week. Christmas is already the most named occasion in the week's gifting, ahead of Father's Day, and it is not coming from one unusually organised store. Notes naming December turned up across dozens of shops in different countries.
Seasonal gifting overall made up 3% of the week. Small, but it has been steady rather than spiky, which is what an early season looks like before it becomes a rush. For jewelry shops in particular this matters, since keepsakes are bought early and often bought twice: one for now, one for the tree.
Fashion shops took the everyday gifts
Behind the jewelry counter and the food shops, apparel and fashion shops handled 12% of the week's gifting. Their gifts look different. Friends are sending each other scarves, bags and small leather goods with no occasion attached at all, and just-because gifts were the second biggest occasion of the week at 25%.
That fits the relationship mix. Friends made up 26% of the week's gifting, second to family at 40%, and friends tend to buy for taste rather than for a date. The geography spread out too: alongside the United States and Britain, shoppers in Australia, Canada, the United Arab Emirates and Spain added to the week, and 55% of all gifting happened outside the United States.
Britain leaned hard in one direction, with roughly seven in ten gifts there tied to a birthday. American gifting spread wider, making room for new baby gifts, thank-you gifts and gifts of comfort in the same week.
What this means for merchants
Two things are worth acting on. First, jewelry and other keepsake products are carrying birthday gifting right now, and birthdays never leave the calendar, so gift messaging and per-item gift options belong on those product pages year round rather than only in December.
Second, the December season has already begun quietly. Shoppers wrapping in September are the ones most willing to pay for presentation, so gift wrapping and premium options are worth having live now, not in November. And for the fashion and lifestyle side, the everyday gift between friends is the volume that hides in plain sight. Catching it takes nothing more than a gift option where the shopper already is: the product page, the cart, the checkout.
Mid-Autumn Festival arrives on September 24 across China, South Korea and East Asia, which gives the next two weeks their own shape. Gifting keeps moving; the only question is whether shoppers are offered the option to make it a gift.
